Paint jobs are won or lost before the lid comes off the can. Good interior work means washing or scuff-sanding glossy surfaces, filling and sanding every ding, caulking trim gaps, and spot-priming stains and raw patches — then cutting lines with a steady hand instead of relying on tape that bleeds. It also means the right sheen for the room: flat hides wall flaws, but a bathroom or trim package needs something scrubbable. Cheap work skips straight to rolling and it shows within weeks — lap marks where wet paint went over dry, a single coat ghosting over the old color, peeling where paint went on over dust or gloss, and wavy cut lines at the ceiling. Two coats over honest prep is the whole trade secret, and there's no shortcut around it.
South Bay homes throw a few specific problems at paint. The sun does real damage here — south- and west-facing trim chalks and fades fast, and redwood trim on 60s and 70s ranch homes bleeds tannin through cheap paint as brown stains unless it's sealed with the right primer. Winter rain finds every unsealed edge: peeling windowsills, swollen door bottoms, and blistering paint on stucco patches that never fully cured. Inside, we see decades of builder off-whites that no longer match anything, glossy oil-painted trim from the 70s that new latex won't stick to without prep, and Eichler tongue-and-groove ceilings that need careful brushwork rather than a fast roller. Knowing which of these you're dealing with is half of quoting the job honestly.
Our painting scope is rooms, ceilings, trim, doors, and exterior touch-ups — the jobs where careful prep and sharp lines matter most. Whole-house exterior repaints are bigger than the work we take on, and we'll refer you to a licensed painting contractor for those rather than underbid a job that needs scaffolding and a crew. On our jobs, floors get canvas drop cloths, furniture gets moved and covered, outlets and hardware come off instead of getting painted around, and we label the leftover paint so future touch-ups match. You'll get a firm price that states coats, colors, and exactly which surfaces are included — so 'paint the bedroom' means the same thing to both of us before work starts.
How we approach painting
- 1We walk the space with you, confirm colors, sheens, and exactly which surfaces are included, and quote it firm.
- 2We protect floors and furniture, then prep: cleaning, patching, sanding, caulking, and spot-priming.
- 3We cut in lines by hand and roll two full coats, keeping a wet edge to avoid lap marks.
- 4We reinstall plates and hardware, pull tape clean, and do a walkthrough with you in good light.
- 5We label and leave the touch-up paint so future scuffs are a five-minute fix.
Typical cost: $350 – $900 per room for interior repaints. See the full pricing guide — every job gets a firm quote before work begins.

Painting — common questions
- How much does it cost to paint a room in San Jose?
- Typically $350 – $900 per room, depending on size, ceiling height, how much prep the walls need, and whether trim and ceilings are included. A small bedroom in good shape lands near the bottom; a living room with patching, dark-to-light color change, and full trim lands near the top. What pushes the number up is almost always prep and coverage: covering deep red walls in a light color takes an extra coat or two, glossy oil-painted trim needs deglossing and bonding primer before latex will stick, and vaulted ceilings mean ladder work for every cut line. What pulls it down: same-color refreshes, walls in good condition, and doing several rooms in one visit so setup and floor protection are paid for once. You get a firm number before we start.
- Do you paint home exteriors?
- Touch-ups and small sections, yes — a peeling garage door, faded trim, siding repairs blended into the existing color. Whole-house exterior repaints are beyond the scope we take on, and we'll refer you to a licensed painting contractor for those. If you're not sure which side your project falls on, send photos and we'll tell you straight.
- Is prep work included in your painting quote?
- Always — prep is the job. Every quote includes cleaning, filling nail holes and dings, sanding, caulking trim gaps, and spot-priming stains or patches. If your walls need heavier drywall repair first, we do that too and it's listed as its own line item, so you can see exactly what you're paying for.
- Can you match my existing paint color?
- Yes. If you have the original can or color name, we use that; otherwise we take a chip from an inconspicuous spot and have it computer-matched. Keep in mind sun-faded walls sometimes won't blend with a spot touch-up — when that's the case, we'll recommend painting the full wall and say so before quoting.
